Modern bathroom with shower: Eight tips for planning

Floor-level showers are indispensable in modern bathrooms – they provide elegant access and greater freedom of movement. However, for true accessibility and comfort, additional solutions are essential. We present the eight most important ones here.

Because it’s about more than just design – functionality and accessibility are crucial. When planning modern, accessible bathrooms in particular, it is important to find solutions that are both aesthetically pleasing and safe and comfortable for all users. A modern bathroom should therefore include the following elements:

  1. Floor-level showers for easy access
  2. Comfortable seating options such as shower stools and stools
  3. Support rails for additional safety
  4. Customizable shower rails systems
  5. Flexible shower curtains for more freedom of movement
  6. Practical shower shelves and boxes for storage space
  7. Useful hooks for utensils
  8. Safe thermostats to prevent scalding

This equipment ensures accessibility, comfort, and safety in the bathroom.

CHALLENGE: ACCESSIBLE SHOWER

Level-access showers are popular because they are aesthetically pleasing and offer easy accessibility for all users. They enable wheelchair users to shower independently. But a level-access shower alone is not enough. Shower stools, support rails, and other products also contribute to accessibility. HEWI offers a wide range of products that meet the individual needs of users and make showing comfortable.

1.     SHOWER STOOLS – COMFORT AND SAFETY IN THE BATHROOM

High-quality shower stools offer versatile seating and storage options that increase comfort and safety. HEWI shower stools can bear loads of up to 150 kg and are hygienic and slip-resistant. Different sizes and shapes guarantee that shower stools fit into every shower.

Permanently installed shower stools have a folding seat that creates space when required. They can be fitted with a backrest. In addition to permanently installed or height-adjustable shower stools, the HEWI product range includes mobile models.

Further information on our shower stool models can be found here.

2.     STOOLS – MOBILE SEATING FOR THE MODERN BATHROOM

Stools support safe sitting in the bathroom and shower. They are flexible and can be used in different places. HEWI stools are available with integrated recessed grips and handles to make it easier to sit down and stand up.

HEWI has developed special solutions for overweight patients that promote mobility and independence. The HEWI shower bench can support up to 300 kg and allows for safe sitting in the shower. Side handles provide additional support.

3.     SUPPORT RAILS – SAFETY IN MODERN BATHROOMS WITH SHOWER

Support rails provide safety and support in the bathroom by ensuring stability. Grippy surfaces and adapted cross-sections enable dynamic gripping and effective leverage. HEWI support rails can be used flexibly and are available in various materials.

A reliable seal is available with the HEWI sealing element. The fixing roses of the HEWI support rails and System 900 bar systems can be fitted with them. The products are designed so that water does not collect and can run off. Especially practical are support rails that can also be used as shower rails.

4.     SHOWER RAIL SYSTEMS – INDIVIDUAL DESIGN

Shower heads and rails with shower head holders are a must-have for every shower. With the HEWI system design, HEWI enables you to create a continuous design from the door to the sanitary room. HEWI rails with shower head holders are available in various designs and materials.

The HEWI WARM TOUCH shower rails combine the visual properties of chrome surfaces with the tactile properties of polyamide and are pleasantly warm to the touch. Particularly innovative are systems in which the shower bar can be used as a support rail. The HEWI shower rail can be extended with shower handrails :

The new magnetic shower holder from HEWI increases the feeling of comfort in an accessible shower. Height adjustment is easy thanks to the magnetic function, and one-handed operation is intuitive and effortless. The magnetic shower holder is available in stainless steel, chrome, and powder-coated in white, black, and gray and thus harmonizes with the other HEWI ranges.

5.     SHOWER CURTAINS - SPACE FOR UNRESTRICTED MOVEMENT

Level-access showers offer more freedom of movement in sanitary rooms. Fold-away shower enclosures or shower curtains offer additional support. Curtains can be pulled aside when the shower is not in use and provide more room to move in smaller bathrooms. HEWI shower curtains are available in various designs, some of which are treated against mold and mildew stains, are washable, or are flame-retardant according to DIN 4102/B1. The HEWI product range also includes various models of curtain rails.

6.     SHOWER TRAYS AND BOXES - INDIVIDUAL PLACEMENT

Shelves create space in the bathroom. A wide selection of shower trays is available to match HEWI sanitary systems. Different sizes allow flexible mounting at any height. The shelf inserts can be removed for easier cleaning. Clip-on storage boxes from HEWI are compatible with the rod systemsand eliminate the need for additional drill holes.

7.     HOOKS - LITTLE HELPERS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Hooks allow washing utensils and items of clothing to be placed within easy reach of the shower. They are particularly practical in small bathrooms in which bulky towel holders would take up too much space. HEWI hooks are available as single or double hooks. The chrome look makes the hooks look particularly elegant.

8.     THERMOSTATS - SAFETY IN THE SHOWER

In the shower, it can quickly happen that users reach the hot faucet body and scald themselves. The HEWI SAFE TOUCH shower thermostat protects against this danger. The technology cools the tap body from the inside and prevents the surface from heating up. In addition, the thermostat has a hot water lock that prevents scalding and thus ensures safety in the bathroom.

Bathtub and shower: Combination tips

The combination of bath and shower in a modern bathroom offers both comfort and functionality. Here are some bathtub/shower tips to ensure that the implementation is accessible and user-friendly:

  1. Non-slip surfaces: Non-slip materials in the bath and shower area prevent falls and increase safety and comfort.
  2. Install support rails: Support rails on the bath and in the shower provide additional support.
  3. Shower screen or curtain: A shower screen or curtain keeps the water in the shower and separates the shower area. This helps to keep the bathroom dry and safe.
  4. Entry aid: A step or stool can make access to the bath easier, especially for older people or those with limited mobility.
